After a few weeks of listening to your selections and pretending that I'm some sort of a music critic, I've come up with a list of music that is to me, well...awesome. I give to you, in no particular order, my favorite "new" music. To share them with you, I had to use Youtube links. Click on the addresses.
"The Curse" by Josh Ritter
--a really cool video to go with it. Eric, why haven't I ever heard of Josh Ritter?
"Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai" by Manna Dey
--Hesh got me hooked on this song.
"Bulletproof" by La Roux
--It's the 80s all over again. I heard this song at a store and I wanted dance down the aisle. We can thank Dock 86 for introducing me to this.
"Suspicious Minds" by Elvis
--I've never been a huge fan of Elvis, but this song just sticks in my head.
"Jolene" by Dolly Parton
--I love you, Dolly.
"Stereo Love" by Edward Maya
--I heard it in the car on the way to work and it stuck in my head for a week.
"Winds of Change" by the Scorpions
--Used to listen to this on KDWB back in the 1990s. Nice call, Mayur! This takes me back.
"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" by Cher
--This one's for you, mom! What an odd video.
"Warriors of the World" by Manowar (re: the movie "300")
--Courtesy of Mukesh. This has to be one of the worst songs I've ever heard, but yet, I can't help but listen to it...a lot. I kind of want to get into a random battle with someone when I hear this. If you see me with a black eye anytime soon, you can blame this song.
"Six Days at the Bottom of the Ocean" by Explosions in the Sky
--I can see why this is your favorite album, Justin. I've started to listen to other music by these guys. The Texan Sigur Roos. Nice.
"Raga Saga" by V.S. Narasimhan; performed by the String Temple
--The video says it best: east meets west. This ensemble is brilliant, especially the first violinist. This is my first time hearing a fusion of Indian and western classical music. If anyone out there is liking this, I also recommend the composer Tan Dun and his concerti for traditional Chinese instruments and a western symphony orchestra.
"Justified and Ancient" from the KLF
--Straight out of the early 90s. My friend Kristen and I would listen to this record a lot. Awesome! "They're justified and they're ancient and they drive an ice cream van." Why not.
"Marukleara" by Lalgudi Jayaraman
--Sumithra is introducing me to classical Karnatic music. I know nothing of it but I am eager to learn. This piece of music is unbelievable! I wish that I could see him playing the violin.
I saved the long stuff for the end. The following are some pieces of music that I've heard recently on the radio and I had to put them into my playlist immediately!
from Khatchaturian's "Spartacus" ballet
--I heard our orchestra rehearsing this one day and then I heard it on the radio and I fell in love. This particular performance is done pretty slow, but it's still good. I've seen the Circus Maximus in Rome several times--which is now a big, grassy field--and I can picture the chariots racing around when I listen to this.
"Three Tales" by Steve Reich
--Most of Reich's stuff is boring, but the Three Tales is a really cool DVD. It's a made-for-DVD opera. My favorite piece from it is the third, "I couldn't Understand It" which is at about 5:55 in this video. Note: this Youtube video is NOT the actual opera video... if you ever get access to it...watch it!
Dvorak's Carnival Overture
--Not a huge fan of Dvorak, but I definitely like this one.
Finally, a couple of honorable mentions:
"Look No Further" by Dido
--There might be an advertisement before it plays, but if you wait, it's worth it. It's from her album "Safe Trip Home" which is full of mellow music like this and specially-made videos to accompany each song. I used to listen to these often but I forgot about them until recently. Check out the other videos/songs in this album.
"The Importance of Being Idle" by Oasis
--I think I heard this song at least 200 times in the period of just four weeks when I was going to school in Italy a couple of years ago. I had no internet connection in my room, no phone, no music system, but I did have a TV that had ONE channel: MTV Italia. And they played this song over and over and over and over and over again. Now when I hear it, I am immediatley swept back Rome!
--I can't believe I'm posting this song! Remember this one, mom?!?
{cheers}
